Maori First Contact

First Contact

Similarities

Differences

In both texts, it says Abel Tasman was the first European to visit New Zealand.

In the 20th centuries (Kupe) was one of the first maoris to arrive New zealand

In the text when Abel Tasman arrived New Zealand four of his dutch man had gotten killed so he left disappointed

In these texts I have noticed that when four of the abel dutch men were killed Kupe was not alive.

In this text I know that Kupe used his hands to guide him to find New zealand.

In this text I found out that Abel tasman was only looking for treasure

In this text I know that new zealand was the last land to be found

Independent Maths Work

Last Wednesday's Maths

 Last Wednesday’s Maths

WALT: Estimate, take actual measurements, work out perimeters and

areas of objects around the house.

If you wanted to measure the length of a pen what unit of measurement

would you use?

Mm, cm or m? Both cm and mm are acceptable but mm will be more accurate.

Estimate how long you think the pen would be

How long is it actually? I thought it was 10cm but it is 14.4cm or 144 mm

If you wanted to measure the height of a regular water bottle what unit of

measurement would you use?

You would use cm

Estimate the height of a water bottle

What is the actual height? I thought that my water bottle was 30 cm but

it was 22.7 cm

What unit of measurement would you use to measure the length of your bedroom?

You would use meters

Estimate the length of your bedroom I thought it was 5 meters

What is the actual length of your bedroom? It is 3.73 meters

Find the length of five objects in your house. Record what unit of measurement

and tool you are using to measure (e.g. a metre ruler or ruler, cm or mm)-Measuring tape

  1.  A door  in your house- 1.95 meters

  2.  A window- 74 cm

  3.  Closet door- 1.99

  4.  Table- 1.98

  5.  Your bed-1.85 meters

Can you work out the area of the lid of your chromebook? (Imagine it was 2D).

What measurements will you need to take? Length 30cm x width 20cm= 600cm

squared

Can you find the perimeter of your chromebook? Length- 30cm+width-20cm=50x2=

100cm

Can you work out the area of your bedroom? Length 3.76 x width 2.99= 3x2=6

Find out what the dimensions should be for a regular basket ball court and a

regular football court.

Basketball court- 29m by 15m

Perimeter- 29m+15m=44m (44x2)=88m

Area-29m x 15m= 29x10=290 29x5=145 290+145=435meters squared

Football court

Perimeter-105m by 68m  105m + 68m=173m x 2=346m

Area-105m x 68m=  100x68=6800m squared 5x68=340m squared

6800m squared+340m squared=7140m squared

Find the perimeter of both these courts

Find the area of both these courts

Hint: Perimeter of a square = side x 4

Perimeter of a rectangle = 2 x length + 2 x width

Area of a square = side x side Area of a rectangle = length x width

Last Friday's Maths

WALT: use multiplicative and/or additive strategies to solve measurement problems.

A student measures her height with a 30 cm long ruler. She finds that she is four and a half rulers high. How tall is she in cm? 30cmx4=120cm ½ of 30cm=15cm 120cm+15cm=135cm

A student is told that they are 1.45 m tall. How tall is this in cm? 145cm If it takes 3 hours to drive 210 km, what was the average speed of the journey? 210 divided by 3=70kph

A class of 28 is split into small groups. How big can those groups be? Factors of 28 1 2 4 7 14 A car, travelling at an average speed of 70 km/ph is in a journey of 210 km.

How long will the journey take? 70x3=210km so it will take 3 hours to get there. A long distance swimmer takes 80 strokes to swim 100 metres. He wants to swim across Lake Taupo, a distance of 4200 metres.

 a. How many strokes will it take for him to swim across the lake? 3360 strokes

 b. If he can swim at a rate of 60 strokes per minute, how many minutes could he swim across the lake in? 56 minutes

 c. Can he expect to beat the 2015 champion swimmer who crossed the lake in a time of 51 minutes and 48 seconds? No because if he does 60 strokes per minute he
